Sean's Place

Location: 713 N. 1 st Street, Richmond, Virginia 23219

What we do
Sean's Place is a transitional home and counseling program for 13 adult men and women . Residents are provided a safe, stable, and independent environment to pursue education, develop vocational skills and build personal strengths.

The overall philosophy of Sean's Place affirms each individual's dignity and worth. Every resident is assigned his or her own bedroom and is given maximum privacy. At the same time, the program provides clear expectations that a resident will actively engage in supportive activities that will enhance both personal growth and promote a positive lifestyle for others in the house.

Every resident is required to develop a challenging yet realistic plan, which serves as both a guide and measuring tool throughout the individual's residency. Each resident is charged $300 per month for program fees including rent and must save 15 percent of his or her gross monthly income. If needed, a resident may remain in the program up to 18 months before making the transition into permanent housing.

Who we help
Residents at Sean's Place are further along in their recovery than those at The Community Shelter, but still require limited guidance from a case manager who offers support in the areas of personal growth, living skills and housing. Sean's Place serves as the final step for many adult men and women who have come through other Freedom House programs or who have demonstrated an ability to change through another local service organization.

Who supports us
Rent payments collected from the residents cover the majority of the monthly building costs and program fees. Additional funding and services are provided by businesses and private donations.

How you can help
Washing machines, sheets, and pillows are often needed. Volunteers who can spend time on special projects such as teaching basic computers skills are especially welcome. Please contact Ken Roth to learn what items or services are needed for either The Community Shelter or Sean's Place.

Program history
Early in Freedom House's history, it became clear that traditional shelters typically don't offer the kind of support and environment that is needed to help the chronically homeless make the transition off the streets. Sean's Place was founded to help bridge this gap and give individuals the skills and opportunity to achieve complete self-sufficiency.

Plans for the transition program began soon after the Catholic Diocese of Richmond offered Freedom House a building, formerly St. Joseph Convent and School, rent-free in the Jackson Ward neighborhood of Richmond. Unfortunately, the building needed a significant amount of renovation before the program could be established. It was only after several generous donations, a $60,000 grant to renovate the building from HUD, and the hard work of many volunteers, that Sean's Place was permitted to open in 1990.

This program is named after Séan Brendan Finucane (1970-1988), whose family and friends were instrumental in making sure the transition home would become a reality.
